There is NOTHING Nintendo can do to please these kind of people. Recognize the reality that some people hate Nintendo for being what they always were: a family-centric videogaming company. Videogaming consoles were designed around the living room naturally & therefore had to appeal to all members of that living room. All the Wii is doing is continuing and better implementing the original purpose of this medium. Nintendo's 1st major home console was called the Family Computer...the Famicom. And Nintendo has been trying to make a better version of the Famicom ever since. Wii finally realizes these struggles. We got sidetracked along the way as "family" got relegated to "kid" & then those kids grew up & became "teens". This is the 1990's when console gaming started to fragment into these cliquey genres that everybody couldn't enjoy. Sega in order to outmarket Nintendo deepened the split with appealing more to teenaged/preteen boys with Sony taking it further to mean teen/young adult males in general. Accidental females were present but the target was young and male. In product and in press. Microsoft reinforced this attitude with those who never remembered what it was like before thinking this current format was the way it always was supposed to be. Wii brings the female into the established boys club more than ever & this is the backlash. Wii brings so many outsiders that the salespower forces the others to reluctantly follow suit or get left behind in a limited marketplace. The fact of the matter is this. Nintendo doesn't play that casual/hardcore game. They are doing what they have always done. They try to include as many people as they can into this gaming hobby to make as much money and influence as they possibly can. EVERYBODY. Not just boys. Not just girls. Not just kids. Not just teens. Not just young adults. Not just middle-agers. Not just elders. EVERYBODY. And everything we see from them is designed with the intent to make this appeal. Some folks don't like that they do this sort of thing & will never be satisfied until what Nintendo represents is out of the business forever. They hated Nintendo last generation & the generation before that. But the irony is that the hobby they like so much could not exist the way it does today if NOT for that company they hate so much. This is the chafer & they know it. Knowing that what they despise can really not be defeated if this industry is to survive eats an ulcer through their stomachs. So you will only hear futile gripes, bitching, and complaints. That's what powerless people do. If what they think gaming should be was as successful as they believe, XBox 360 & PS3's titles would sell evergreen on the charts month after month. People would copy their implementations & redesign their console into that image. The Wii would not be the biggest selling home console worldwide month after month. DS wouldn't rule as it does over the PSP. But it's not. The industry's massive record growth is due to Nintendo. Solely Nintendo. These kind of people would be better served on the high-end PC game market. Those kind of games are designed to cater to a specific audience. Consoles were always designed to be as broad as possible. Nintendo is trying to break down those genre walls & quit focusing on serving one particular group of people. You don't agree with their decision? You have 2 other competitors waiting for you to vote with your dollar. If what you believe gaming should be is out there, then you better support it. Because a good business will only make what the customer really wants. While most people laugh at the Wii Vitality Sensor I'm paying close attention because Nintendo has done it again! The complainers will be egg-faced once again like they were for the past 5 years concerning Nintendo. Nintendo does best when it disregards the unpleaseable & focuses on what can bring them to another level. Even if it's an idea like New Super Mario Bros. Wii. John Lucas |
Whoa quite a read I must say, made me think a lot, even about situations in real life, as you stated people without power seem to bitch a lot, and I see that in real life all the time "the man is keeping me down" is a classic line, when in reality there are a million things to do to better yourself. I never really thought of things that way. I don't agree with all of it but overall you've made a damn good argument.
(and hey my thread has a reply from the Legendary John Lucas I'm flattered)
