2D Mario are the roots of the franchise and perhaps even moreso the roots of Nintendo as a whole.

Lots of people identify and enjoy that style. It's easier to pick up and play also. Mario was always about being the game you could play, your sister could play, even your parents would try, but that sorta changed after the series went 3D.

Besides, it's not like SMG didn't sell great. At 8+ million copies and counting it has sold more than GoldenEye or Zelda: OoT on the N64 and more than any game on the GameCube. You are getting a sequel to both NSMB and SMG ... there's really not a lot of room for complaints on this front.

Bravo! Best piece of writing today. Those are true words.

Agreed. A 2D multiplayer Mario will be good-Four Swords on Gamecube is likely the best Nintendo title many people have never played-and will have a wider appeal than Galaxy 2. But since we're getting a new 2D and a new more core centric 3D Mario game... I'm quite happy.

I wouldn't call NSMB Wii or Wii Sports Resort Nintendo's top 2 E3 titles, but I can see them being 2 of the top 3 selling games of the year. And the third will most likely be Wii Fit Plus.
