Yup, and I remember many people freaking out that "this is the end of Nintendo" and predicting either Microsoft buying Nintendo or Nintendo pulling a Sega. Ignoring the billions and billions that MS/Sony have lost.
It's interesting, Nintendo's basically the reverse of Sony + Microsoft (gaming division). Both of those are basically hardware companies that make their own games occasionally, while Nintendo's basically a software company that builds their own consoles. Nintendo's consoles have always been essentially vehical to allow Nintendo to build the games they want to.
