While the game will still be fun with friends in the same room, online is a necessity nowadays. They can't allow themselves to do another mistake like that! :/

Online play is totally overrated.

Sure, I'm not an online player myself, but other people will surely downgrade the game because of that. It sucks to see them waste opportunities like this to potential consumers.

The people who are going to complain the most about no online are those who wouldn't have bought the game anyways. Besides, from my understanding this is a full fledged Mario platformer that can be optionally played with other people and not a mostly multiplayer focused game. Which Mario fan would pass on a new 2D platformer? It's been three years since the last one and before that we had to wait 16 years.

I was expecting that kind of response to be honest. With what you said, I'll give you this: Why not always think about doing more?

Maybe I always like to do surprises to the people around me and I always want the best to happen to anyone, even companies like Nintendo... but I guess in game development it doesn't work so easily. It's probably not easy to do with all the hardware limitations and stuff! xD
