Smash bros will probably sell more overall, but it doesn't have the same rabid, hardcore following that halo does. It's the same with any Nintendo game: There's a relatively small group of players that get it in the first day, and a lot of casuals that will buy it in the first year. The same thing happens with GTA and Guitar Hero: A broader appeal makes their sales high in the long term, but not in the short term.

And yes, Nintendo's advertising doesn't even come close to what others spend. It's hard to have great first day sales when most people don't know the game's release date.
