When did you notice a division in sides in gaming.

I'm not sure where you're from but Nintendo did the nastiest thing to SEGA in the history of gaming:

They absolutely blasted them in front of the Congressional panel that was investigating violence in video games back in the early 1990s. Read up on it, Nintendo fought dirty and took every opportunity to try to get Congress to bear down on SEGA. I really hated Big N for quite some time after that.
