It is only crucial to your idea, not anyone else's, since it was your assumption.
For any console to be successful in the long term, of course it wants to have games in all genre since it would make the console appealing to the most broad audience. However, when Reggie said "In order to achieve high levels of sales of hardware, we need all genres in the market", somehow it becomes we want to make more RPG, fighter, and FPS games for PS360 owner. The leap of logic is beyond me.
Also, there are 186 millions gamers in the previously generation (PS2: 140+, Xbox: 24, Gamecube: 22) and there are about 103 millions of console sold this gen. Assuming all console this gen is sold to a console owner from last gen, that's at least 73 millions gamer from previous gens for Wii to target. This is already larger than the PS360 user base and does not include any potential customers who never bought a console last gen. Making games appealing to PS360 would be last thing in Nintendo's book for the success of Wii.
MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
