The standard Nintendo defence would be "Whenever Nintendo announce core games, the audience hear about them rapidly. Conversely, a casual game gets much wider attention at E3. Therefore Nintendo will use that limited time to show off casual games and leave the core games to other conferences or annoucements."
Which is true, and they certainly did half of that last E3, but there was no follow-up with internally-devleloped core games. They showed off a lot of third-party ones like S&P 2 and Punch-Out but no IS, EAD, Retro, etc. games.
