@ioi: This is how I saw the previous site:
- My stuff was on the left (links to check my private messages, profile, and the list of forum threads I participated on)
- The latest content was in the middle column (news and reviews first, then the forum threads). Everything either chronologically or by popularity in this column.
- The right column was for extra info (much like the one in the current site, no complaints here).
In the new site, "my stuff" is not immediately accessible in the homepage. The news/reviews content is split between two colums. It just seems like accomplishing less with more.
I don't know if what I feel about the site is just due to the change. But I'm curious as to what goes through the mind of someone opening the site for the first time. There's just so much packed together that it might be quite overwhelming.
EDIT - I read your addition about the number of pages. That makes sense, but given the number of people saying there's too much content packed together, it could be interesting to do a survey on that, or otherwise evaluate the reaction to this design.
