From various online articles, in one form or another: 'Only when the Wii consistently moves product like the DS will it be a true success The early retail success enjoyed by the Wii across multiple launch territories is certainly reassuring for Nintendo, but President Satoru Iwata is hesitant to call the new console a bona fide winner just yet. In an interview with Yukan Fuji, Iwata acknowledges that the Wii must still prove itself to be far more than a novelty and "impulse purchase" through continued third party support: "Any system will sell well following launch, but there will definitely come a time where it will stop selling. Even the DS hit a rough spell after selling 1.5 million units a month after launch. The flame was really lit a year after launch, after Nintendogs and Brain Age became big hits. With the Wii, we have to make good software just as we did with the DS. "So long as we continue the fight against the lack of interest in games from the general consumer, Nintendo will always be the challenger. For example, one challenge is in developing software that keeps people from saying they're no longer interested in swinging the Wiimote." Iwata also apologizes for the shortages currently plaguing the Wii, explaining that the company has difficulty meeting demand even though it is producing on average 700,000 consoles per month.' This story's a few days old, but I just felt like bringing it up. Yeah, I'm a Nintendo fanboy...but for good reason. Nintendo's a great, strong company that makes great consoles and games, and doesn't forget about what the consumer wants. Amidst a Sony spokesperson bashing the Wii for being a so-called "impulse buy," and giving quick, sketchy answers whenever somebody asks how the PS3 is selling, I'm glad Mr. Iwata acknowledges not meeting demand and apologizes for it. It's also nice to have the President tell us that it's a hard fight and they'll continue to try to make things interesting for us. I wasn't planning on getting a PS3...and now I'm especially inclined not to get one after Sony belittled me and the other 4.5 million Wii users. Sony may act all high and mighty, but at least Nintendo doesn't throw insults at them.
