Nintendo Fanboys have hated Sony ever since Sony hijacked Final Fantasy. We all know the story about CD's Vs. Carts etc., but hear me out. Now everyone knows that FF7 was the best selling FF game to date in the west. Many attribute this to hype/cgi/marketing, which I won't dispute. But I think there was another reason that FF7 did well and that was because a lot of kids had actually really enjoyed FF3 (FF6) on SNES. Now, I realise that FF3 only sold about half a million copies in the US, however, I also know that kids were passing these carts around (not surprising since the thing cost 80 bucks when it came out) and in my circle often there were like 5-10 kids playing the game on a single cart. Though sales may not have reflected it the seeds had been sown for the RPG genera to "blow up" in the west during the tail end of the SNES era. It was devastating watch the SNES be the RPG king then have the N64 be stripped entirely of all RPG's. I can't name a single RPG of note that was on N64. Since this time Nintendo fanboy's have wanted Sony to die.

Microsoft fanboys hate Sony because of how easily the PS2 routed the X-Box. I think most of that had to do with again the RPG advantage and also the fact that PS2 would get GTA games a year before X-box. The best maneuvers that MS made this gen was not only to come out first- and cheaper- but they made damn well sure that games like GTA4 and Resident Evil etc. came out at the exact same time as the PS3 version- Stripping away what was easily PS2's hugest advantage in the west.

Finally you have ex-Sony fans who weren't really Sony fans but were fans of having the leading console. These people find rooting for the underdog to be more tiresome then going with the sure bet and have abandoned ship. If Sony makes a comeback this gen they will switch back pretty quickly.

The PS3's worst days are behind it though, as the reasoning behind the hating becomes less viable with time.

It has no games: The game lineup is sick right now.
Bluray is not selling and is a non factor: Killed HD-DVD faster then expected, sales up.
Too expensive: The final hurdle that has always kept it down let's see what the price drop does.

I think that these people you describe aren't "fans of having the leading console", but instead were "fans of having the games they want to play".  I have a Wii, but I didn't buy it because it was the leading console.  I bought it because, at the time, it had what I wanted to play on it.  Same thing goes for the PS3.  When MGS4 came out, I bought one.  I don't think cheering for the underdog, or having the best sales means anything to anybody when it's time to play a video game and have some fun.
