Not really. Last gen they went up against GC and this gen they're up against the PS3.

Microsoft went for the PS3 because Sony was the last gen's marketleader. It assumed that they were the main competition and tried to pull their PS2 buyers in their camp by launching quickly. When the wii broke through, they were proven wrong in their gamble (of biggest competitor) and overall strategy. At this point they couldn't really switch anymore to the wii, so focussed mainly on keeping the PS3 in the corner. The next time, Microsoft will assume that Nintendo is the prime target and plan for it.

That's what i mean with going after the biggest player. Something similar could have happened with the gc, not sure though. I wasn't really in gaming in that generation. But it's true this generation. Microsoft thought the battle would be between Sony and it. They planned year(s) for it. Once executed they were unable to change the plans much. Once you build your console, that's what you have to work with.
