at first, i thought i can only play online co-op with people who owns the Asian version, then i found out the majority of my co-op partners are japanese.  so i assume there is no region restriction for the online play for DS.

If it's region free, then woo! But I'm worried with two different publishers. Atlus may not use the same servers.

I hope so. I don't want to buy it twice.

Hmm, good point. Though I'd think Sony and Atlus would work something like that out, a part of the "deal" could be Atlus not having to pay for servers.
