I get what your saying it could have been sadder.  I actually didn't read any of the dream sequences, but I plan to on my second playthrough and once I actually own the game (borrowed the game from a friend and beat it).

I know this doesn't go for everyone but the reason I did not read through all of the dream sequences is because you know how people complain about wanting to play a game instead of watching a movie? (MGS4) With that I felt more like playing the game and not having to read a novel every 30 minutes or so, even thought they were very very well written.

Everything that makes that scene sad was probably explained in the dreams but I just felt like with this game I would have been better off reading a Lost Odyssey book before playing the game, that way I could actually get some worthwhile backstory on my character.

*"Explained in the dreams" meaning his emotions, etc.*

I don't know, I guess I just prefer my character to be fleshed out through gameplay and not text written on screen with a forest backdrop.

I still want to finish the game though. Only 1 disc left.
