But there is no rule against using anything said on the forums to create a thread, or even a random post in a different thread. The sig rule is not really relevant unless people are quoting large chunks of text into their sigs (I wouldn't know as I have them disabled). There have been dozens of threads designed to do nothing more than make fun of someone for a stupid prediction or some other random non-sense and this all happened before VGCIM was even implemented. Why treat it differently than we treat the forums?

People that post on the forums know up front that what they're saying is going to be seen by a lot of people. They have basically given their permission for it to be read by everyone and can reasonably expect it to be forever in the public domain. Can you honestly say that about IM?
Also it's usually impossible to look up the source material to verify that the account being given is accurate and in the proper context. It's far too easy for someone to put their spin on an IM conversation by leaving things out and putting someone in the unfair position of defending themselves from something they may not have actually stated. |
Saying soomething in a public chat makes it just that, public. If you don't expect it to come up again then you are painfully ignorant. There is no difference between a public forum, and a public chat in terms of privacy. If people are altering the chat in order to make a point then someone can check the logs to confirm it. That is not currently a problem though.
