I think there are definitely difficult JRPGs out there, just have to know where to look. I just spent 2 hours retrying the same boss over and over again with mildly increasing success in Devil Summoner 2. Sure difficult games can suck sometimes, but there's nothing like the feeling of accomplishment once the big elephant bastard finally goes down.
not sure if that was all relevant, but my mighty elephant massacring brain is tired since it is late.
