Wii sold more 3rd party software than 360 and PS3 (not combined) in 2008. Biasing your list by only using the top 10's, which include mega games like GTA, Metal Gear Solid and Call of Duty 4, obviously won't tell you anything about 3rd party sales, just about the distribution of the big 3rd party games over the platforms.

Well Pinab posted this:
Total by 3rd party:
Wii: ~ 140M
X360: ~ 180M
Ps3: ~ 100M

I presume the numbers are somewhat accurate but I don't really know. Also the Wii has more bargain bin prices and a much larger userbase. When it comes to 1st party sales though the Wii definitely dominates. Not quite as much when you exclude Wii Sports and Wii Play but still the highest.

I'll post this then:

"NPD data has made clear that, in the calendar year of 2008, Wii was the hardware on which the biggest number of third party software were sold in the U.S."

There's a fair difference here.

Benga is talking about 2008 Worldwide

MJC replied with lifetime worldwide.

You're giving proof of 2008 Americas.

Neither one of you really gave any proof for/against whether Wii sold the most in 2008. Now, for me to figure out how much first party was sold in 2008 is a fair bit more difficult than to figure the lifetime. So, I'll just expect the same 1st/3rd party ratios as in the LT. That is, Wii - 50%. Ps3 - 25%, X360 - 20%

So, it is thus.

Wii - 170.1M total * 0.5 = 85M

X360 - 112M total * 0.8 = 90M

Ps3 - 80M total * 0.75 = 60M

So, by VGChartz numbers (and a rough estimate by yours truly), Wii60 is virtually tied, and they're 50% higher than the Ps3.

When I write Fact: in one part of the post, and opinion: (or a similar word), it's not because I can then say "my opinion can't be wrong". It is to inform what part is pure facts, and which part I try to draw a conclusion in.
