I was just curious what the sales would look like if we excluded Japan from the comparisons and just looked at things in the western world.

     America  Others Total
DS 133,799 178,318 312,117
Wii 91,182 109,169 200,351
PSP 29,110 52,934 82,044
360 46,813 59,323 106,136
PS3 33,266 50,522 83,788

Some interesting points can be made about the sales once you remove Japan:

  • The gap between the Xbox 360 and PS3 is 27% which is more inline with the price differential around the world.
  • Nintendo and Microsofts sales show a negligable different without Japan, whilst a handheld like the PSP sees much of its success in Japan, the DS/Wii are truely world wide consoles.
  • The relative strength of the PSP in Japan should be helping Sony there with the strong Yen making imported components cheaper, whilst Nintendo would be taking more of a hit due to currency fluxuations as their sales are centred outside of Japan, but their much higher profitability is hiding the effects of the strong Yen.

I think for this kind of analysis to be more factual you should look at Japan over the gen instead of over a given week.

If you look from the start of the Gen :

Wii : 16.2% of sales

Xbox360 : 3.4% of sales

PS3 : 14.4% of sales

DS : 25.8% of sales

PSP : 25.7% of sales

So in the end Sony and Nintendo have about the same percentage of their revenue coming from Japan.

The only difference is that recently the part of Japan in Nintendo revenue has shrunk while the part of Japan in Sony revenue has been growing...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
