You pay an extra $10 per game for the priviledge of playing it on a console, compared to an equivelent PC game. Also the cost of the games price stays higher for longer. Live is just another one of those 'costs' for consoles. The difference between Sony and Microsoft is the former is losing a crap tonne of money and the latter is barely doing better than breaking even. So yes, Microsoft is being selfish and evil, but only marginally as the net balance between gamer and console maker is about even.
