I do not think it is that big of a deal for Sony. All three console makers are taking a hit and the PS3 is still consistently selling on par with the 360 worldwide.
Actually, forcefully boosting PS3 sales when the console is probably not close to breaking even is risky. It may put another heavy burden on Sony's financial crunch. I think strengthening their software lineup is a safer choice, which is what they seem to be doing.
On the other hand, Microsoft needs to plan carefully. They have to secure the upcoming major holiday seasons. Otherwise, they will have barely any momentum going into 2010. This will give Sony a really good chance for a solid comeback.
