The characters you don't know about should be the ones that fuel curiosity and make you want to play it. I already know what the original Capcom ones do, but I want to see the mysterious Tatsunoku ones as well.

 

Not buying a game because of new characters is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

There is definitely a logic to what you're saying, but when it comes to licensed games the psychological connection is different. Few people go out and buy a Naruto fighting game that don't watch Naruto. The reason is with the license half the fun comes from playing as characters you recognize and connect with. Playing with a Might Guy/Rock Lee team isn't nearly as bad ass if you haven't watched the show. The appeal isn't the same. If it comes down to playing this or Marvel vs Capcom 2, I choose the latter because of the connection I have with the Marvel universe over the Tatsunoko one. Playing Tatsunoko vs Capcom is going to leave me feeling like I'm missing something. But having Spiderman fight Strider...bad ass.
