Coming from a gamer that has played the full GT series (the second one on Dreamcast thanks to bleemcast ) and both Forza´s , the differences are not that great
I played to death the first 3 GT´s mostly the 3rd and i loved it allot , so i was eagerly awaiting the fourth game only to get disappointed, it was the same game nothing had changed i wasn't gona play GT 3 all over again only with some more cars and a different number on the cover
The big problems with the series are, AI is just stupid its the same since GT1 nothing has improved over the last decade on that front witch makes the racing really dull once u get to 1 place nothing will ever happen since the AI is not aggressive if u race on there racing line they will stay there all race behind you even if you stop in the middle of the track lol
The bouncing on walls and other cars is another thing that really deters from realism even more then the lack of damage damage if u want to win don't use your brakes just slam your way up to 1st place it works all the time ,Polyphony addressed this problem in the worst way possible in GT5P by not allowing contact between you and other cars with is the stupidest and most ridiculous way of addressing a major problem in the physics engine of the game because Turismo racing in real life is a bumper to bumper racing sport with allot of contact between cars
Another one is the engine sounds of the cars its complete crap i just cant imagine how they capture the sounds for the game compare it to something like GTR2 on the pc to see the difference hell even people on the GTR2 community get amazing sounds to mod the original game but polyphony always goes for the trapped wasp inside a bottle kind of sound that is so ridiculous things have improved on GT5P witch is a good sign for GT5 but still not good enough
So for me GT series is a very dull series to race because of the problems with AI and physics( has any one ever flipped a car in the GT series ? ) but a great one for time attack since it removes all the problems with the series and only leaves the great aspects of it like great attention to braking distances and the need to keep a good racing line if you wana be fast
To end my GT analysis i think it is a staled franchise on many aspects that finally polyphony are addressing on GT5 and its about time as well
As for forza series i haven't spent as much time on it as GT but to say thats its not comparable in terms of gameplay is stupid, my main problem with the series is that it tried to hard to be the Gran Turismo of the xbox and went for the same structure has GT witch annoys me more then anything else and that leaves in in the shadow
It tried to differentiate itself by adding damage and online play witch gave it a more human feel
The damage to the cars really makes a big difference on the races makes you drive with more precautions makes you wait for a good passing opportunity something that was not needed in GT because you could ram the other car at no cost and that adds allot to the immersion of the game makes you thing more like a racing driver and less like a gamer
my favorite is GT series the fact that i point out so many negative aspect is because i enjoy racing both on virtual and real life and if Gt wants so be THE REAL DRIVING SIMULATOR it needs to address these issues to make that claim more credible
