I am going to put out the hypothesis that if we compared sales by region, the attach rates would be almost identical.  I'm too lazy to actually do this myself mind, but thats what I think would happen.

OK, let's try. Here's the sales shares of PS3 and 360 in America, compared with the old data:

PS3 America PS3 Total 360 Total 360 America
FPS                 24.91% 23.92% 36.58% 34.01%

Shooter 2.54% 0.00% 11.68% 10.39%

Action 16.75% 23.68% 7.64% 6.64%

Racer               13.63% 15.83% 4.33% 3.71%

Adventure 8.27% 9.57% 8.46% 7.91%

Platformer        3.29%  6.18% 3.12% 3.04%

Sports               13.31% 15.28% 5.11% 11.97%

RPG                   2.33% 2.35% 13.29% 11.22%

Fighter     2.47%  0.00% 0.00% 0.00%
Other     12.49%  3.17% 9.78% 11.10%

As you can see, there's some more FPS+Shooters for PS3 in America (27% vs the 24% of the worldwide share) but still much less than the 44% of the 360 in America.

The attach rates for FPS+shooters amount to 0.89 for PS3, 1.70 for 360. The differential is +0.81 (+91%) and is thus bigger than the worldwide one both in absolute and relative terms.

The real big difference for PS3 in America is in the "other" genre, actually... once again Rock Band and Guitar Hero games. Now this is a genre that seems to really be deeply rooted in the american market.

Sadly, I can't as easily get the ordered sale data for others and Japan. I would have liked to include the 360 in others+Japan in there.

Edit: added the 360/America data

interesting how that changes the numbers.  The sports caught my eye, they are almost equal in America, but 360 trails by quite a bit worldwide.  Is this due to soccer games and the 360's crappy d pad?

hmmm, I guess my hypothethis is inccorect, but this is just the top 25 games correct?  It might be different if we compiled all the data.  Of course, I'm not asking you to do that, that would be pretty much impossible.  Still, it might change the numbers.

It also sucks that there isn't an other or japan data.  That would have been pretty interesting to see.  What do you think the rpg attach rate would be for the 360 there, 80%?  Seems like the only reason japanese buy the system.
