let me tell you something as someone who works at retail. The PS3 is doing just fine. Yea, it is selling less then the Wii and 360.Yet it is also the best selling console of such a high price tag of all time. Any other would have diminished already. PS3 is still competitive is game selection, features, and so on. As time goes on, prices will fall, and the PS3 will start hitting mainstream price range where it is affordable.
You underestimate the power of brand name, and the power of Sony's Will. What other console could outsell a console only a little over half it's price?Damn sure not an xbox or Nintendo product. Sony does want to win, but they also wanted to do something new and bigger then last gen. Sacrifices needed to be made. They will suffer lower sales NOW to only recoup them in the FUTURE!
I suspect Wii and 360 to decrease in popularity very quickly over the next few years as the PS3 slowly keeps creeping it's foot into the door. Sony has given it the hardware to stand the test of time.
It has to last 10 years(yes I said it) because there simply is no going back at this point. What is Sony suppose to do?Take it off the market? And do what exactly, make a more inferior sequel? I think not, and to think so is purely delusional. Yes, as you said, retailers keep what is making them money and shelf space is limited etc. But every PS3 sold makes them the MOST money and regardless of the 360 selling more, it only barely does so over the PS3. A $500 console selling anywhere near a $200 system's numbers is great for retail.
