I haven't played FFVI yet, but so far my fondest memory of a Final Fantasy game is that of IX.
It's an long, epic( and I know this term gets thrown out a lot), mostly lighthearted(but gets dark at the right moments), adventure and (given your choice in shows and from the vibe I get from you personality wise) I honestly think it would fit you really well.
To put it into perspective, I personally think Suikoden II is the best RPG I've ever played, and I would be fine if it was the best RPG I will ever play in my short life, but I would still recommend FF IX to you if given a choice between the two.
