The Werehog levels were more like the old Sonic games than the day levels were.

I'm sick of people whining that Sonic needs to run fast. He wasn't that fast on the Genesis, The Genesis games were about a MIXTURE of speed, platforming, puzzles, exploration, power-ups, boss fights, and enemy fighting.

The day levels were pretty fun, but all you really did was run->QTE->run->jump->QTE->run.

There was no platforming. There were no puzzles. It was on-rails, so exploration was limited. The enemies were sparsely placed, the boss fights were underwhelming, and the power-ups were basically non-existent.

The daytime levels of Sonic Unleashed simply weren't what Sonic is about. People who want only speed out of Sonic games should go play Sonic Riders or Rivals.

Did you play the Wii version or the 360/PS3 version? I loved the basics of the design of the Wii version, and I wish the 360 version had it's design in the same way. Eggmanland was awesomesauce in the Wii version.

EDIT: I'm strictly speaking of the daytime levels with this post.
