Last generation, pretty much everyone was pro PS2, there was almost no questioning the power that thing had, game-wise, saleswise, it was overkill.
Now it's like Nintendo vs. Sega in the early '90s: two big, thestosterone'd guys constantly pushing each other and fans getting all worked up over it. The difference now is that this battle is in the back yard of market leader Nintendo, who is used as a shared boxing ball by the both of them. Sega and Nintendo fans didn't have a common enemy until Playstation, and even then that was a different story.
