Having just returned from China i DO NOT want to see this happen in the West. If the system is in place that allows them to regulate what information people see, then they will abuse it. Control of information is control over people.

An example that i witnessed when i was in China was when the protests in support of Tibetan liberation occurred around the Olympic torch relay. People in China got genuinely angry about attitudes and what they saw as western interference in their domestic policy, because they have never been allowed to hear the other side of the Tibetan issue. Foreign teachers were beaten up, stores were boycotted, there was an internet clamp down preventing those who do speak English from gaining access to foreign articles on the issue and people got whipped up in frenzy of sickening nationalistic fervor. This all combined to create an us versus them attitude which is great for the existing government as discourages people from looking critically at their own country and government.
