I haven't played the other two, so I can't judge those, but ToS should be an amazing game. My friend is extremely addicted to Tales games (especially Symphonia) and he's put hundreds of hours into that game.
There is one thing I'd like to point out, ToS is going to be extremely different from the other two games, at least Harvest Moon. I'm not entirely sure what Rune Factory is like, but Harvest Moon is about as close to ToS as the Legend of Zelda is to Mario. |

I'm not sure if it's dire to play the first game in order to understand the second, but I doubt it. It would just make the second one a lot more fun and you'd definitely understand things more.
I haven't played either of them yet, but once summer comes around and my friend comes back home, we're going through both of them together. Should be awesome!

STUPID QUESTION: can you use the wiimote + nunchuck for gamecube games, like not the motion control, just the buttons and joystick?
