I don't see how SONY could be anywhere CLOSE to break even on a $399 PS3. I have to figure they are still losing AT LEAST $100/console at that price... The reason I think this is that the cheapest stand-alone blue ray player is about $400 and I would be willing to bet that those are going out the door at cost or maybe even a little below. If you factor in all the free Blu-Ray disk movies they give away free, they are definitely losing money on the deal. Yeah, I know it doesn't cost much to included the disks themselves, but you can bet that the studio is getting some kind of money for letting their content out the door "for free". That would mean that the PS3, being a full blu-ray player, would have a cost of about $400 PLUS the cost of the cell, RSX, and other miscellaneous parts in the system... That's just my speculation, of course...
Somewhere I read that sony recently sold off an insurance division or something like that and netting a couple of billion dollars in the deal. Rumor was their plans were to use that money to subsidize the PS3 and get the price down... Maybe that wasn't rumor after all...
