Starcraft, heres the timeline:
Red/Blue/Yellow - Gold/Silver/Crystal - Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - FireRed/LeafGreen (which are remakes of red/blue, and came out before emerald, but after ruby and sapphire) - Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
theres really no particular order you play them in, so go ahead and play emerald now. IMO, it is worth tracking down FireRed or LeafGreen. (try ebay)
As for gold or silver, they're essentially the same game, with a few pokemon exclusive to each game.
serebii.net is a very good resource for any/all things pokemon.
