You're asking the wrong people for advice. A good majority of this group giving their opinions likely don't play sports games at all. They'll push their agenda now, and when you come back asking for their Gamertags or PSN ID's(whichever you choose) you'll come to find they'll come back telling you how tired sports games are and how they're just roster updates.
Frankly, the two consoles are relatively equal in the quality of the multiplats, so you can't go wrong with either. You can initially spend more up front for a PS3 or slowly build up the costs of getting Xbox Live if you had plans on going online. MLB The Show really is a fantastic game, second to only Power Pros, but it definitely has more of the realism you're looking for. If you get a 360, you can friend me and play Madden, Blitz II, All Pro Football, UFC Undisputed, Smackdown vs. RAW 2008, Fight Night Round 4 and NBA 2K with me. If you get a PS3, I'll play you in MLB 09 The Show(I should have it within the next few weeks), NBA Street Homecourt and Fight Night Round 3). I don't really play soccer, golf or hockey games.
Before listening to anyone giving you advice, ask them whether they even play or give a shit about sports games in general first.
