It's more like a coincidence actually. PS3 has the advantage of selling in all territories, while the 360 doesn't sell in Japan. In the Western world, the PS3 isn't tracking the 360's sales:

The 'other' one isn't fair, as it tracks the release of the PS3 in some area that isn't Europe/Australia for the first 16 or so weeks. Thus it isn't a true aligned launch. The PS3 is selling better (thusfar) from an aligned launch perspective everywhere but the US.
