I am still using the original straps for my Wii, I have the new thicker ones tucked away for if those ever break (which they don't look they will any time soon). You can always get the things and store them away. You never know when you might have someone who wants to play that you don't trust in front of your TV.
Anyways, I ordered them and will probably just check out what they are like etc...if I like them I'll use them, if not they will probably find a nice cozy spot and get pulled out when I have Wii n00bs over who want to play.
I'm just glad Nintendo was kind enough to offer them free for those who want them. I think a lot of people understimate how well this sort of thing plays with the soccer mom and dad who have a decent TV and cringe every time Timmy and Billy play Wii Sports Baseball.
