why would microsoft pay for exclusives and timed exclusives?

If I remember correctly that was their entire reason for entering the Video game market in the first place, they wanted to cut in on Sony's market (games) before Sony made the move to transform the PlayStation into a home computer and therefore cut in on Microsoft's market (OS's)

 

That, my friend, is EXACTLY why they did it. Why else would a company that makes huge profits from software(windows) decide to get into the much more risky business of hardware(game consoles)?
