why would microsoft pay for exclusives and timed exclusives?

If I remember correctly that was their entire reason for entering the Video game market in the first place, they wanted to cut in on Sony's market (games) before Sony made the move to transform the PlayStation into a home computer and therefore cut in on Microsoft's market (OS's)

 

 

This. They want to do decent in Japan and make money, but it is far more important for them to keep sony from doing well. By taking those jrpgs, they have done just this. I believe more PS3s would have been sold overall if MS did not help pay for some of these games.
