It happened with several RPG games on the N64.
The Conduit might end up as another good example of this phenomenon. Let's hope we're all wrong.

Reason #02: Over-hyping also happens when a specific game is supposed to save a console's 'reputation' or prove it's potential (read Lair). ADDED.

Ps3 is considered by many as "Shooterstation 3", if that's the case why was Killzone 2 considered "over hyped?" Killzone 2 was not over-hyped it was 'just hyped'. Lair was over-hyped.

 

My post is just a couple of factors/examples of hype to over-hype.

We won't be able to find the exact definition.
