I don't think it will be sony's last console....sony made a big name already...they made systems from generation to generation...somehow those people or a person who pushed through the first consoles are out or is out of business, yet there are some other people who will come up with a new and better idea to create a newer or better console depending on what the generation may ask for....technologies change through generations...

This...

to OP:

the situation of sony can be an analogy on square-enix's situation on FF...

Playstation became a well-known brand as well as FF

while Sakaguchi is out on the FF games...

FF still being developed and released...

so......

While Kutaragi is out of the Playstation business... I am sure that a new PS is on development

therefore PS3 will not be the last console of Sony...

look at nintendo, they garnered a very small sales lifetime, but still a Wii emerged...

we only know little my friend...

and oh... PS3 is not the last video game console of SONY it is the PS2...

PS3 is no longer called as video game console as well as 360...

they are now called Home Entertainment Console....

This is the big problem with Sony and Microsoft, videogames consoles are not home entertainment consoles. They should be videogame consoles. Why cant Sony just leave their dvd format battle outside of the console war? Not every videogame fan wants to be forced to buy a format he already has stand alone in his house because Sony can't beat their competition by themselves.

The bolded part is actually something I agree with you on! Could be because I always own most tech standalone and don't need it but it is also partly because it causes higher prices and is mostly half assed in execution (allthough I hear the Blu Ray player on the PS3 is actually quite good). I don't see the choice to go with DVD's on PS2 and X-box as poor though; it is a superior format for audiovisual and visual output in every way and greatly helped potential quality of games back then.
