I see this as more of a success for the industry, rather than the PS3, as it shows that the market has grown by a considerable margin.
This generation is already at 100 million + sales (excluding DS and PSP), last generation the total was probably around 180m (just pulling that number out of my arse, 20m GC, 25m XB, 135m PS2). I'd wager dollars to doughnuts that this generation can catch last by the end of this year.
