I agree, McCain ran a terrible campaign that was completely inappropriate for the kind of election it was likely going to be (and turned out to be). He was moving towards his base after the primary rather than moving towards the center. The primary is the time to please your base. After that, you essentially say, "Fuck 'em. They will vote for me no matter what I do."
