It's a holdover from ancient times. Take Ancient Rome for example, it was perfectly acceptable for married men to have affairs but it was completely unacceptable for women to do so. It was also acceptable for men in general to have affairs with women of equal social standing and with men and women below their social standing. The entire double standard probably originated a very long time ago due to the lack of birth control methods and when dominance came mainly from physical strength (much like we see with different animals).
