American Football has been proven to have more force per tackle than rugby. Having pads leads to not subconsciously slowing down, and throwing your entire body into a tackle because you know you will be relatively safe. Just throwing it out there if you are saying that it is more strenous because of the physical tackling. There are more injuries in rugby though despite the difference in force. I dont know what is the most demanding sport, but I can only speculate some type of man v. man gladiator sport. What is more strenous than fighting for your life?

This is undoubtedly due to the fact that American football is more specialised allowing you to field larger players and have generally faster play (F = ma). Rugby is more biased towards endurance with alot of the players having to play most or all of the game, running more, and with much fewer stopages than American football.
