A couple years ago there was a big difference, plasmas were very superior to LCDs. But today even the cheaper LCD 40 inch TVs look good. Plasmas still have slightly better picture quality though.
But I would choose an LCD today, just not buy the cheapest one, not one from the cheapest tier, but the 2nd price bracket (40% higher price) and they're great.
