I'm sorry I have to this bronco, and it's nothing personal, I have OCD when it comes to this phrase, like a pet peeve, I say it to everyone that uses it.
But, something cannot be merely "Juat a theory", a theory is a very high scientific acolade. You start off with a hypothesis, which is an idea that has to be tested. You conduct research to find if the hypothesis is correct, if it isn't start again, if it is you have a theory... then you further test the theory to adapt it to the new evidence.
If you were to say "This is just a hypothesis correct?", then I would have agreed with your statement.
Once again I do appologise.
anyway, on topic:
I read something in New Scientist that said they had gained some evidence to adapt to it. So I think they are pretty sure they are on the right tracks.
