@Final Evangelon, theres only one major operating system for computers, one internet, one fax machine standard etc. If the consoles continue to lack interoperatability then as more and more consoles are connected...

There can be only one.

Many car manufacturers, many manufacturers of televisions, many fast food joints, etc.

There may be some more standardization, but this generation won't be seeing only one console manufacturer.  Probably not next generation either.  If one leaves, another one will probably come in to try and compete.

As more an more people start to use the online components the most important feature becomes "can I connect with my friends" moreso than "who has the best games/whose hardware is better". PSN does not connect with Xbox Live so it becomes more of an issue as time passes.

That is a point.  If only PSN and XBL integrated with Steam...

Unfortunately, either the games will become interoperatable or one of the players will have to drop out, perhaps even two. Even if only 50% of machines are ever connected, if one manufacturer gets a majority of those machines it will be easy to grab much of the non connected machines due to sheer weight of numbers and keep them because community will hold people to a particular manufacturer. This has been Microsofts strategy all along.

Tease.
