It matters with regard to what I am interested in personally.

A special PS2.5 version could be released onto the Chinese market and sell half a billion, that wouldn't matter much to me personally at all. I still would view this PS3 2.5 as based on last gen low specced technology.

If a low specced PC sells 10 times as much than a high specced PC, I still wouldn't buy the low specced version if the high specced version provides me with significant benefits.

It's not all black & white people, sales aren't everything. For example the NES sold really well, but the Amiga 500 in general had far better quality games for it. Multi-platfrom games sucked on the NES compared to the Amiga versions.

The NES in general (apart from Mario) was of no interest to me.
