The OP's question has a flaw in it. How could anyone have wanted Blu-Ray from the beginning when no one actually knew if HD DVD was going to defeat it? The choice to make the HD DVD drive as an add-on for the 360 pretty much pushes the idea that most people in this thread have been talking about: Keeping the system at a low cost.

I personally have a PS3 as well as a 360, so it would have been beyond pointless to spend my money on both consoles were they both expensive due tto having the format built in. So, in this way, you can see that my choice to get a 360 was actually positively effected by its lack of Blu Ray. At the same time, I think that a Blu Ray add-on would be of great value to the 360 because it would give those who only have the 360 the option of choosing to use it.

Microsoft discontinued the HD-DVD add-ons were discontinued. Extra crap like that isn't needed. It's just Sony forcing products into the market that consumers don't actually need because of shareholders.
