I would love to join in on the fun, but since you said you actually wanted a serious answer, I'll take one for the team and give you one.
It's a combination of work on the site, having squeaky clean behavior as a mod, participating in staff issues (discussing bans, news articles, etc.), keeping in close contact with the admins. Generally being involved with the rest of the staff.
