That said, the success of Chinatown Wars really depends on criteria. I think it's a success in some areas and a failure in others. I expected more sales wise, but it definitely exceeded my expectations in gameplay and reviews.

 There is no extra attraction because it is 3D, I will grant you that. There is additional attraction because the game plays differently in 2D rather than 3D. There are a few other genres that just feel completely different when in 3D rather thn 2D Look at the Japan sales of NSMB vs the sales of SMG as an example of this in platformers. It is absurd to discount radical changes in gameplay mechanics as a reason for a radical shift in popularity.
