VGChartz, IGN, and to a lesser degree Gamespy.

Gamespot used to be far and away my favourite, as at the time they didn'thand out 9s (or even 8s... or 7.5s) like candy. I remember seeing their score of Oddworld: Munch's Oddyssee (a 7.9) and thinking 'Wow! This game must be awesome!"

In fairness, those were the days when a 5 or 6 was actually average. You know, like in every other critical field.

I hate gaming journalism sometimes.

Exactly.  Six or seven years ago, gaming journalism wasn't the facepalm-inducing fanboy war that it is now.  We're now living in the "7.0 is terrible" age where scores are bought or bribed, not earned.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
